Amazon Web Services has just launched a new region in Montreal, and Canadian businesses interested in moving to the Cloud should be jumping for joy. The usual set of services is now fully supported, including: Amazon EC2, Amazon RDS, Amazon DynamoDB, Amazon Redshift, Amazon Elastic MapReduce, Amazon Glacier, Amazon SQS, Amazon S3, AWS Elastic Beanstalk, and AWS Snowball. Noteworthy exclusions (at least for now) include Amazon API Gateway, Amazon EFS, Amazon WorkSpaces, AWS Lambda, AWS OpsWorks Stacks, and AWS Service Catalog.
As far as network connectivity, the lower bound latency from Montreal to Toronto or New York is 9ms, 47ms to Calgary, and 60ms to Vancouver. The US East region is 16ms away, and US West is 75ms. With this most recent inclusion, AWS now supports 16 regions worldwide with a total of 41 Availability Zones, and it services customers from over 190 countries.
That’s a lot of accessibility. Making the switch to the Cloud makes sense here in the United States, a place where Cloud services have been taking over for some time. It’s also a no-brainer for the likes of Comcast, GE, Netflix, Adobe, and Netflix - businesses with monstrous data management and scalability needs and whose IT departments really understand the utility of the AWS Cloud. These companies and so many others have helped AWS claim roughly 31% share in a global market densely populated with competitors.
To put it plainly, AWS has become the go-to source for Cloud infrastructure and data management not only for the US market, but also for Canadian businesses. This is due in no small part to their continuous, massive Cloud services platform expansion and their proven ability to create the most comprehensive, flexible and innovative cloud solutions on the market.

Here are some reasons for migrating your data to the Cloud:
IT management and maintenance is streamlined through the AWS Cloud. Resources are administered centrally, infrastructure is managed by the vendor, and vendor-customer agreements are SLA-backed. Since all resources are maintained by the service provider, you don’t have to worry about internal infrastructure maintenance.
With AWS Cloud computing, you can easily scale forward or back your IT requirements as required. You can enlarge your existing resources to accommodate increased business needs or changes. This allows growth support without costly adjustments to existing IT systems.
AWS enables you to select your operating system, database, web application platform, programming language, and other services. With AWS, you receive a virtual environment that lets you load the software and services your application requires. This eases the migration process for existing applications while preserving options for building new solutions.
AWS utilizes an end-to-end approach of physical, operational, and software security measures to secure and harden their infrastructure. In Cloud computing, providers must adhere to strict ISO standards, there is a reduced effect of human error, and a layered approach that includes encryption, key management, and strong access controls improves the security of your data.
AWS is a pay-as-you-go service. You pay only for only the resources and storage space you need, for as long as you use it, and with no up-front commitments or long-term contracts. If there is a service you no longer need, there is no additional cost or penalty for discontinuing it.
For Canadian companies interested in moving their deployments to the Cloud, this all matters now thanks to AWS’new footprint up north. We can only assume that most Canadian companies that deal with complex deployments and large amounts of managed data are smiling ear to ear. But we also know that, in Canada, Cloud infrastructure has been slower to gain traction. Whether it’s an underexposure issue or simply a matter of being stuck in your ways, some companies either aren’t familiar with AWS or don’t know just how much AWS Cloud solutions could help their business. Consequentially, a plethora of Canadian companies are still stranded with outdated and inefficient data management techniques.
For those who haven’t fully accepted the full potential of the Cloud, in Canada or elsewhere, it’s time to face the music: it’s taking over. If you’re still stuck in the world of managing and expensing traditional data centers, you’re missing out on cost-effective, massively scalable, fast and agile, externally managed, global data management solutions. It doesn’t get much better than that.
As the Cloud tightens its grip, companies that do not graduate from ways of old run the risk of losing competitive edge in their respective business sectors. We’re talking to you now, Canada. Jump on this opportunity. The AWS Cloud is here, and the benefits are undeniable.
